Details

The Tule River is one of the smaller rivers that drain the Sierra Nevada, but it can be a rampaging torrent in heavy snow years. Since prehistoric times it has carved a steep canyon in its Middle Fork above where today’s Springville is located. The river is a host to a wide variety of wildlife, flowers, shrubs, and trees (including several large groves of Giant Sequoia).
John Nelson took the first homestead on what is the largest relatively flat area in the canyon. There he and his family built a flourishing camp reached only by trail until 1922. Extensive horse travel into the Kern River Basin began at Camp Nelson. Later private cabins were built at Camp Nelson with other communities growing up at Doyle Springs, Pierpoint Springs, Sequoia Crest, Alpine Village, Cedar Slope, and Ponderosa. Fishing, hiking, horseback riding, even golf were activities for people who came there to vacation, and to live year round.
